I’d set the gps this morning. After hitting start on the journey, it took me less than fifteen minutes to get to the restaurant. Alvarez’s compliments had given me the confidence boost I never knew I needed. Going on this date was suddenly less about meeting James and more about reminding myself that I could do this. I was hot and young (ish) and I needed to get out there and live.

The parking Gods were on my side. I got a spot directly across the street from the charming restaurant. Moroccan accents dotted the exterior and as I walked towards the entrance, I noticed the theme had been carried through perfectly to the inside, too. Soft, golden lighting bathed the interior space. From where I was standing at the hostess counter, I could see how much detail had gone into choosing the rich colors, fabrics, and tones that set the romantic atmosphere. They’d even built cozy seating booths along the perimeter walls.

I'd arrived before James. We'd call that strike one. The waiter was a bubbly blonde who looked like she'd just finished high school. She bounced over to the table to ask me if I wanted to wait before ordering a drink. Not a fucking chance. I quickly scanned the wine list and settled on a glass of their house white—it would probably taste disgusting. Driving back to Swansboro after this was a bit of a saving grace. I wasn't really in the mood to drink too much. The work we'd finished today ran through my mind. It wasn't exactly a breakthrough, but we'd arrived at that point in the discovery research that always excited me. The framework was becoming clearer. Taking out my phone, I took down a few notes for later.

The hairs on my neck stood up and that prickly sensation you only ever got when someone was watching you came over me. Looking up, I saw my date had arrived. He was standing at the door, doing his best to flirt with the hostess and stare at me. Plastering a patronizingly sweet smile on my face, I waved. He was handsome; like the guys you usually see on the covers of romance books. Wearing jeans and a dress shirt that looked made for him, his bulky frame was at once intimidating and inviting. He winked at the hostess and then started his exaggerated swagger over to the table. No rush. I’d only been waiting for him for close to twenty minutes.

“You look incredible.” I guess we were bypassing hellos. I smiled.

“Thank you, James. You don’t look so bad yourself.” I was blushing against my will. Men like him would see it as encouragement, but I couldn’t help it. Being complimented by a hot man was always going to feel awkward and wonderful.

“I’m so sorry for being late, Bri. Can I call you Bri?” I wanted to say no, but I promised Tor I would try, so I nodded. “It took fucking forever to get out of my last meeting.
